Auction Results in August
02 September '10 by mike, under real estate.
For all those real estate junkies out there, I’m starting a new monthly post which will show statistics based on Inner West auction results. I am a complete data nerd, hopefully home owners or home hunters will also find this useful.
If you own a house I’m sure you are hoping the property market continues to rise and if you’re looking to buy a house you’re undoubtedly hoping that the market is slowing down. The Inner West is great place to live so I’m sure we’re not going to see any huge drop in property prices.
Let’s have a look at the auction statistics for the month of August in the suburbs of Newtown, Erskineville, Camperdown, Alexandria, Stanmore, Enmore, Petersham and Marrickville.

Miss Mica Still – A Seduced Me
30 August '10 by nadine, under art & design.
I find it impossible to walk past the Oh Really Gallery without peeking in, and the current exhibition by Miss Mica Still is no exception. Not only are the artworks amazing but the painted walls are absolutely fantastic.
American born but now living in Kiwi land, Miss Mica Still has brought her playful, sexual, exploratory, fun and naughty work to our Aussie shores and I love it. With artwork titles like “Enjoy Toys”, “Limber up before you eat”, Find your inner beast”, “Make sure your chair is sturdy”, and “Master your orgasms”, how can you resist just a little peek into this exhibition.
Inspired by animals and symbols from her dreams the “Adult Themes” paw print on the front window of the gallery gives everyone fair warning before entering. I need to get me some of these dreams!
The bears on the walls showcase the images of desire that Mica Still has created by layering drawing, paint and resin on wood. You need to get up close and personal to explore the layering of her work and the intimate imagery. Human faces and bodies are intertwined and obscured by that of bears, wolves and lions in some rather naughty and compromising positions.
“A Seduced Me” exhibition only runs til 5 September. Let’s hope we can entice Miss Mica Still to return to our shores again soon. If you can’t make it to the exhibition before it finishes take the time to check out her website – this chick rocks!

Property price guide above $80. Anyone interested?
29 August '10 by nadine, under real estate.
For those people who are looking to buy a property in the inner west and have been struggling to save the 10% deposit – this might be the property for you. The price guide indicates the vendors would be open to offers of about $80. We all know real estate agents tend to indicate a price guide a little bit below what the property if likely to achieve – but this is a little ridiculous.

movies…movies…movies…
28 August '10 by nadine, under entertainment.
You can tell what a complete party animal I am by my extreme level of excitement at receiving the Dendy Spring newsletter this week, outlining all the movies I have to see in September, October and November. Without a doubt there is a movie that will appeal to everyone coming out in the next couple of months.
The Kids Are All Right – September 2
The Disappearance of Alice Creed – September 9
The Girl Who Played With Fire – September 23
Wall Street 2 – Money Never Sleeps – September 23
Eat, Pray, Love – October 7
Buried – October 7
Let Me In – October 14
Cyrus – October 14
Red – October 28
Due Date – November 4
Wild Target – November 11
Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows: Part 1 – November 18
The Social Network – November 25
I will be taking advantage of the $7 Dendy member screenings to see “The Girl Who Played with Fire”. I loved the books and even though we all know the movie is never going to be as good – I just can’t resist going to see it.
And for those of you that are fans of Japanese Anime, you can get your fix on the big screen at Dendy. The 2010 Reel Anime Festival is on from Thursday 2 – Wednesday 15 September and you can see Evangelion: 20, King of Thorn, Redline and Summer Wars.
So I have my movies planned out til the end of November… that leaves us only 1 month away from Christmas – oh my goodness time flies.

Zanzibar Rooftop Terrace
26 August '10 by nadine, under entertainment, food & drinks.
It has been ages since I have been to Zanzibar (actually I think the last time I was there I had my first kiss with a gorgeous Czech boy who now happens to be my husband - ahhh the memories) but I recently enjoyed lunch up on the rooftop terrace. It was a stunning afternoon basking in the sun and enjoying the great food from the “Grub with Love” menu and a nice glass of wine with friends.
Between us we sampled several meals off the menu. We tucked into the beef burger, fettucine with chilli prawns and feta, paella and chicken pizza and everything was great. Big servings so bring your appetite – the hike up the many stairs to the rooftop will help work up a hunger. And who doesn’t like a good cocktail? On Wednesday & Saturday they have $9 cocktails between 6-8pm and 1pm-3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Well the cocktails certainly worked for me – I snagged myself a husband.

Luxe Bakery, Newtown
22 August '10 by Kylie, under food & drinks.
Have you ever heard of pistachio and olive oil cake, how do they come up with these combos? I tried this at Luxe Bakery mid week and it was so lush I could feel the olive oil nourishing my skin immediately, it felt like a sweet and beauty treatment all in one. I wonder what the kilojoules are like?!
This bakery/cafe is just around the corner from King St, right next to Campos Coffee on Missenden Rd, Newton.
Try the soup of the day or one of the panini style sandwich offerings or take home a sensational sourdough bread baked on premises. The coffee is great too, it would have to be with Campos Coffee right next door.
Disregard other websites out there that say it is not open on Sundays, it definitely is. Weekdays opens at 7am and closes 4.30pm, weekends opens at 8am. Breakfast is till 2pm and lunch is till 3pm.
This afternoon I dropped in and had a Belgium dark chocolate and oat chewy biscuit ($3.50), again the antioxidants of the dark chocolate and the oats surely outweighed the negatives of the kilojoule count?
This place is always busy but it is worth waiting for a table or grab a panini and take it outside to enjoy this gorgeous winter sunshine!

Gelato Blue
20 August '10 by nadine, under food & drinks.
Gelato Blue (recently renamed from Dolce and Gelato) is a well known gelato establishment at the intersection of Erskineville Road, King Street and Enmore Road. I can hear the gelato calling out to me everytime I am in Newtown… a call which I can never resist. Some people can’t think of anything worse than eating gelato on a cold day but it makes no difference to me whether it’s a stinking hot summers day or a cold wintery day – every day is a good day to eat gelato.
My fav combo is chocolate and wildberry. Occasionally I am unfaithful and have a short fling with lemon and mango or toblerone and kinder bueno, but I can never be unfaithful for too long and I inevitably head back to delicious choc and wildberry.
For those crazy people out there that might not be fans of gelato or ice-cream you can also buy coffee, tea, hot chocolate and the well known Nina Chocolates.
I normally have my gelato as a take away and the wander up King Street in a gelato induced euphoric daze, but there is also loads of seating upstairs where you can sit back, relax and enjoy.
The mum and daughter team behind Gelato Blue have been there for the last two years, so pop in and say hello!
